My software
On this page I will keep a list of the software tools I use on my Mac. It is meant as a reminder for myself as well as an inspiration to other switchers on which programs to get for different purposes. The list will not include the standard programs in Mac OS X nor the more obvious programs such as Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox.
When I need a new program I look for it at VersionTracker. This is a large database of programs with user comments and ratings which I use as a guideline to picking the right program. I usually pick three or four programs and visit their homepages to read more about them. One of the things I look for is project activity; how long is it since last update and how often does the program get updated? If a project is dying it wouldn’t be my primary choice.
The list of programs
Adium X (Adium X homepage) Instant messaging program that gets you online on more or less every instant messaging protocol there i. I use MSN Messenger, ICQ and Jabber with Adium X and it works like a charm. Adium X is open source and released under the GNU General Public License.
TextMate (TextMate homepage, my review of TextMate) A comprehensive text editor with suppport for more or less every programming language you can imagine. Has built in support for some scripting languages and easily accessible online help. Note: it is NOT an IDE. TextMate costs €39 and a 30-day trial can be downloaded from the homepage.
Transmit (Transmit homepage) Nice tool for transfering files via FTP. Key features include bookmarks and editing files “directly” on the server with a third-party program. Fast and reliable program. Transmit costs $20 and a 15-day trial is available from the homepage.
VLC (VLC homepage) VLC is a must-have for playing those media files. Since the standard Quick Time player in Mac OS X is limited (for instance you can’t play video in full screen) why not opt for a free alternative that also does a better job? VLC plays everything including partially downloaded and damaged files. It is free software and released under the GNU General Public License.
